A major step forward in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing (AML/CFT) in Madagascar has been achieved with MoU between SAMIFIN (Financial Intelligence Unit) and the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the University of Antananarivo.

The FATF identifies jurisdictions with weak measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing (AML/CFT) in two FATF public documents that are issued three times a year. The FATF’s process to publicly list countries with weak AML/CFT regimes has proved effective. As of October 2024, the FATF has reviewed 137 countries and jurisdictions and publicly identified 112 of them. Of these, 85 have since made the necessary reforms to address their AML/CFT weaknesses and have been removed from the process. 

October 22th 2024. In a significant step toward bolstering economic stability and growth, Mamitiana RAJAONARISON held a productive meeting with Kodjovi EKLOU, the representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), at Anosy Antananarivo.

The discussions centered on the strategic plan of SAMIFIN and the national strategic on AML/CFT.

The dialogue provided an opportunity to assess ongoing programs and explore new avenues for collaboration.

Antananarivo, October 27th 2024 — Madagascar’s Anti-Corruption System held a meeting with Ms. Ashita Mittal, the new United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Representative for East Africa, at the UN offices in Andraharo. Each entity outlined its mission and expectations for future collaboration with the UNODC. SAMIFIN (the Financial Intelligence Unit) highlighted several key points, reflecting its ongoing commitment to good governance and its already-initiated projects.

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) hosted the Hot-zone Prioritization Forum, under the WCO Project OCTAGON, at the WCO Headquarters in Brussels.
